The New South Wales Government has revealed there was a million-dollar cost to taxpayers in the overthrow of the former Premier Nathan Rees.

When Kristina Keneally was installed as premier after a spill motion last year, she set about making some changes.

The Department of Premier and Cabinet has revealed the cost of staff severance payouts in the office of Mr Rees was just under $998,000.

The figure has been detailed in answers to questions on notice, published after budget estimates hearings last month.

During the hearings it was revealed the department's former director general John Lee was paid $363,000 when he was made redundant at the end of last year.

Between January and September this year, 26 ministers' staff have also received severance payouts.

Ms Keneally has retained four former Rees staffers. One was re-employed after their severance payback period had expired.
